What To Do in Difficult Times: 8 Lessons From the Trenches (When Giving Up Feels Easier)

Thriving Coach Sunday Newsletter

Hey Reader,

Before I tell you what to do in hard times, let me tell you who I am to give this advice.

I’ve been an entrepreneur for over a decade. A coach for more than 8 years. And I’ve lived in a war zone for nearly 2 of them.

This is not from a book. Not from a podcast. Not from a trending quote on Instagram. This is real life. My life. And if you’re building a coaching business — especially during challenging times — maybe it’s your life too.

The Truth About the Journey

Entrepreneurship is hard. Coaching is hard. Doing either when your kid is sick, your partner is unavailable, and your country is at war? Almost unbearable.

And yet… here we are.

  • Some days, you keep going without seeing results.
  • Some launches flop.
  • Some weeks, your calendar is hauntingly empty.

And inside? You’re tired. You’re anxious. You’re spiraling between desperation and hopelessness.

You Always Have a Choice

If you're in this storm and still want to continue, here’s what I’ve learned — the hard way:

  1. Work on your internal state. Stress makes you stupid. (Truly — it hijacks your logic.) Calm is your competitive advantage.
  2. Shift your beliefs. Failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s part of it. Learn to focus on the process, not the outcome.
  3. Think small. When the world feels too big and the future too foggy, zoom in. Plan for the next hour. The next 15 minutes. That’s enough.
  4. Stick to routines. Brush your teeth. Make your bed. Walk your dog. Drink water. Move your body. Simple things keep you anchored.
  5. Вon’t add new habits. Now is not the time for habit makeovers. Save the optimization for later.
  6. Show yourself some grace. If you fall off the routine, don’t spiral. Just ask: Can I try again tomorrow?
  7. Talk to people. A good friend or a good coach can remind you: you're not crazy. You're just going through something very real.
  8. Take a break. Watch a movie. Eat the damn ice cream. Take a nap. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Especially not those who’ve never been where you are.

Final Words

Your business won’t crumble if you take a break. Your dream won’t die if you take a breath.

But you might, if you don’t.

  • Take care of yourself.
  • Stay strong.
  • Stay soft.

Stay human. And don’t forget to laugh, dance, or at least watch dog videos.

We’re not just building coaching businesses. We’re building lives worth living.

With you in the trenches,

Lidia Axe

Hey Reader, Let's talk about the elephant in the room that everyone's too polite to mention: You're probably a better coach than 90% of the people making 10x more money than you. Ouch. I know. But stick with me because I'm about to blow up three lies that are keeping you talented, passionate, and completely broke. Lie #1: "Quality Speaks for Itself" (Spoiler Alert: It Doesn't) Oh, sweet summer child. Let me paint you a picture: You're sitting in your home office, surrounded by your beautiful...

Hey Reader, AI is out here coaching people while you’re still stuck scheduling that “next available Thursday at 3 PM.” It never sleeps. It never forgets. It never double-books or needs a snack break. If your clients only hear from you once a week (or once a month 😬), guess what? They’re already sliding into ChatGPT’s DMs. So no, you don’t need to panic. You just need to evolve. Asynchronous coaching lets you stay present without being present. More touchpoints, more momentum, more...

Hey Reader, There are two ways to get attention in this noisy world: Build your own audience (via social media, blog, YouTube, paid ads — slow, often expensive). Borrow someone else’s. That’s the cheat code. And one of the best ways to do it? Podcast guesting. I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t that for the big shots? Actually, no. Podcast hosts are constantly on the lookout for fresh voices — especially ones with real experience, practical insights, and good energy 🔥 NB: it's a long one....
